SAVINGS 101: WHY IS IT CALLED PIGGY BANK? THE WHY's of SAVINGS
Alam kong by staring at this picture, the first thing that will come into your mind is..
MONEY or SAVINGS, right?
Pero ako lang ba iyong nacurious bakit of all animals, bakit naging piggy bank?
Bakit hindi dog, cat, or ibang bagay man lang? Here are my 2 assumptions:
ASSUMPTION #1
Maybe, pig symbolizes luck, good fortune, prosperity and abundance
ASSUMPTION #2
Pwede ring mas perfect iyong pig shape to store more coins and bills.
But all of my assumptions are incorrect based on history.
(Ayan, hilig kasi mag-assume kaya nagkakamali e! Kidding aside )
Here's a trivia as to why is it called piggy bank...
According to Business Insider,
"Before the creation of modern-style banking institutions, people commonly stored their money at home — not under the mattress (or hay rack), but in common kitchen jars. During The Middle Ages, metal was expensive and seldom used for household wares. Instead, dishes and pots were made of an economical orange-colored clay called pygg. Whenever folks could save an extra coin or two, they dropped it into one of their clay jars — a pygg pot."
Over time, "pygg" evolved with the English alphabet, turning into "pigge" and, finally, "pig." That explains why potters in 19th century England started making pig-shaped vessels when people asked for pygg banks.
O hindi ba, halos lahat may history o may dahilan and I'm sure may kanya kanya tayong dahilan as to why we are saving. For me, I'm saving kasi simple lang and I'm going to share with you my 2 why's of savings.
WHY's of SAVINGS:
1. Save Money and Money will save you
2. Save Money to save the next generation
#1
" Save MONEY and MONEY will save you"
Save from what?
1. From being deprived of things that I want and might need in the future
2. From worrying where to get money at times of emergency
Life is so short and we have only one life to not do or at least achieve the things that we want, right?
Alam naman natin na ang emergency ay di maiiwasan na posibleng mangyari kahit kanino at ito'y pangyayari na beyond of our control. Pwedeng emergency due to accident, typhoon or to a pandemic tulad ng COVID-19. For an overthinker like me, it's better na prepared kung saan kukuha ng pambayad o panggastos if ever an emergency arises as well as for my own peace of mind.
So a week ago, I ask my friends in my ig story and fb story as to why they think savings are important.
There are 2 common reasons why people are saving:
1. To be secured
- Kita niyo naman , very common sa mga sinagot nila iyong word na "emergency" from that they are really aware that emergency can happen to anyone at anytime.
Just like in our lives, our savings is our instant go-to ng panggastos di ba if emergency happens. In short, sigurado o secured na tayo na may panghuhugutan tayo , thanks to our savings :D
2. To be free
- Freedom to satisfy both needs and wants ng hindi mo mararamdamang deprived sa mga gusto ko gawin. Just like my first reason why I am saving.
- Magkaroon ng choice humindi sa mga bagay na hindi natin gusto gawin, this is the ultimate power of the rich. Example nalang, if ikaw iyong taong busy sa work but still have to do household chores like doing the laundry, if you have enough money, you have a choice to not do the laundry and just pay someone else to do the laundry or just bring it to laundry shop.
Nga pala, I also mentioned this one on my youtube vlog , siyempre plug ko na rin ;)

"Let's save money to save the next generation"
Deep but this is true! Here's why:
Familiar naman siguro kayo sa domino diba?
So, if etong generation natin will start the habit of saving, then, I guess we can pass that habit to our future kids, and the kids of our kids.
That's a domino effect.
We must end the so called sandwich generation squeeze
I know our culture has strong family ties and we are caring mas lalo na kapag #ParaSaPamilya. Yes, I love that kind of love and care that we have for our families, but in reality, we will come to a point that we will feel burned out because you are like in the middle of the sandwich just like in the picture, you as part of the sandwich generation, are both responsible to finance the needs of your own children while supporting your aging parents.
Isa sa mga goal ko sa life is someday, I want to be financially free na kahit retired na ako I can still buy my own wants and needs without depending on my future kids. My future kids will not be burdened to support me and they will just focus on their own future.
Sana kayo rin.
That's why siguro I'm passionate on spreading financial literacy through my simple means like this blog or posting on my social media about finance, investment or savings because I want to influence people like you, the one reading this to make a change.
Goal ko na someday our generation will really
take an action to make a change and break this sandwich generation cycle.
Sana marealize niyo rin na gawing goal for yourself and for your future family.
Once you want this change, you will really have that deep reason to build the habit of saving. ;)
Michsentiments:
If ikaw ay part netong sandwich generation or ikaw ay self-supporting or a breadwinner supporting also your family by means of paying bills, groceries, nagpapaaral ng anak o kapatid, I salute you po because I know it 's really difficult to save up for your own future. Always remember your why, I hope my 2 why's of savings will make you realize and empower you to save :D
Now that you know the why's of savings, on my upcoming blog, I'm going to write about naman on the How's of Savings. Karamihan sa atin, more on future ang nasa isip kaya nagiipon but how about know? How do we enjoy the present while saving for our future? Posible nga ba? Abangan sa susunod kong blog. Kamsahamnida!
